Before any cards are dealt, you must first place a bet. Then you will be dealt two face‑up cards. The dealer will have one card face up, and one down. You then have the opportunity to hit, stand, or split.
A hit is when you are dealt another card. A stand is when you want to stay with the same card. In online blackjack, you will automatically stand if you hit 21 or if you go over 21 — which is called “going bust”.
You can also split, double down, or use insurance. A split is an interesting technique where you can split the two first cards that you are dealt into two hands, if they are the same card. If you play your cards right, you can end up with three hands at a time. Split hands can only pay 21, not blackjack.
A double down is when you can double your bet after you see your first two cards. However, this comes with the stipulation that you can only get one more card dealt to you.
Insurance comes into play when the dealer has a face‑up ace. You have the option to place a bet that is half of the original bet on the table.
If the dealer has blackjack, then the insurance bet pays 2 to 1. If the dealer doesn’t have it, then you lose the insurance bet, and the round continues normally.
